A Weekend in Waikiki )
Sun, Sand and lots of SHOPPING! October 2005

  • Sheraton Waikiki- Modern Luxury on Waikiki Beach
  • Abhasa Spa- An Oasis of Rejuvenation
  • City Lights of Waikiki By Air: HeliUSA
  • Experience American History: The Bowfin Submarine

  • Aloha,

Greetings from Hawaii! This issue of the Preview Hawaii e-newsletter features my recent weekend in Waikiki. The bustle and energy of Waikiki is a world away from the quiet north shore of Oahu, and the two offer a true study in contrasts. We enjoyed the dramatic view of Diamond Head, and turtles on the reef far below us from the 26th floor of the Sheraton Waikiki. There is no more dramatic place for a cocktail and dancing the Hanohano Room atop the 30th floor, and we took advantage of shopping and dining choices throughout the city.

Sheraton Waikiki- Modern Luxury on Waikiki Beach

Rising on a half-mile of soft white sand, the Sheraton Waikiki casts sparks with an endless whirl of entertainment. Vistas of blue horizons, regal Diamond Head, and Honolulu's starry nights clamor for attention, and over two thirds of the rooms directly face the Pacific. While the Sheraton Waikiki is a large and bustling resort, the rooms are spacious and quiet. From all floors of the ocean tower you enjoy a panoramic view of beautiful Diamond Head, and watch the waves roll in s the giant Hawaiian sea turtles roam above the reef right below you. The Sheraton Waikiki is the perfect marriage of modern comfort and Waikiki Beach relaxation.

Abhasa Spa- An Oasis of Rejuvenation

Neighboring the Sheraton Waikiki is the gracious Royal Hawaiian, and within this sophisticated resort is the world famous Abhasa Spa. The Abhasa Waikiki Spa utilizes Hawaii’s natural healing environment, promoting the ultimate in beauty and rejuvenation.  The luxury resort spa now occupies a 7,000 square-foot space in the right wing of the hotel and has announced plans to expand its garden area, doubling the number of outdoor treatment cabanas to eight.  Approximately 3,000 square feet will be added to the garden area, which will also include a lounge and dining area, in 2004.    The Abhasa Spa features natural, organic treatments to relax and heal the body, mind and spirit.  From thalassotherapy with seaweed and aromatherapy to shiatsu and body wraps, Abhasa pampers and soothes every individual’s need with traditional Hawaiian, Japanese, Swedish, and other forms of treatments from around the world.

City Lights of Waikiki By Air: HeliUSA

"Taking Romance To The Skies" is more than a slogan at Heli USA. This fun, romantic night flight is the ultimate evening - Waikiki style! Surrounded by Hawaiian music, you will rise into the air, as if on a magic carpet as the lights of Waikiki appear before you. You will cruise along Waikiki Beach, past the famous hotels such Royal Hawaiian and the Surf Rider. The white sand, palm trees and surf contrast sharply against Diamond Head in the distance. On your return flight you will see the exclusive Kohala district, Pearl Harbor and Downtown Honolulu. As you depart Honolulu airport in your executive A-Star Helicopter, visual sights will surround you whose memories will be remembered for a lifetime. From the vivid turquoise coral reefs and white sand of Waikiki to the extinct volcano of Diamond Head, the mythical home of "Pele," the fire Goddess. With detailed narration and music, your pilot will show you sights such as Nuuanu Pali where Kamehameha defeated the Oahuans in 1795. You will cruise past the lush tropical rain forests and waterfalls made famous in movies such as Jurassic Park, Hawaii Five "O," Magnum P.I., Pearl Harbor and Gilliganís Island. Your flight will include views of Pearl Harbor, Battleship Row, Punchbowl National and the Arizona Memorial. This flight will be the highlight of your visit to Hawaii.

Experience American History: The Bowfin Submarine

No visit to Oahu is complete without a tour of Peral Harbor, and the Bowfin Submarine. This historic submarine offers a rarely seen glimpse into the WWII era in Hawaii, and the brave men and women who perished in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Visitors are given a walkman-style cassette player that narrates their tour as they explore this historic WWII submarine to imagine what life on board must have been like for her 80-man crew. USS Bowfin was launched on 7 December 1942 and completed nine successful war patrols. For her wartime service she also earned both the Presidential Unit Citation and the Navy Unit Commendation. USS Bowfin was acquired from the U.S. Navy in 1979 and opened to the public in 1981. In 1986 she was designated a National Historic Landmark by the Department of the Interior.
